The whole of Europe seems to be full of poorly designed holes masquerading as 'superb' or 'delightful' facilities for both anglers and fish alike, usually with a pointless island stuck in the middle. Unfortunately most are anything but and lake design is often very poor, usually with no knowledge of habitat requirements.

Predation, disease and poor growth are common problems that simply need not occur if the lake is designed properly in the first place. Many new excavations are designed by well intentioned amateurs that have absolutely no idea what the fish or plants need to thrive. Every lake is its own unique environmental capsule and poor ill-informed design can have a devastating effect on both the inhabitants and the long term viability of the project. Most people would never attempt to construct their own house and yet feel that they are qualified to create a whole new, safe and balanced environment that is far more complex than bricks and mortar. The end result is a hole filled with water, ... not a viable productive lake.
