EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FISHING THE AMAZING KERR LAKE AND YOUR HOLIDAY IN NORTH CAROLINA.

If you can't find the answer to your question just drop us an email and we'll include it on the following  pages.

Q : What do I need to organise myself ?
A : As much or as little as you wish. We can organise the whole trip for you, quite literally from your door to the lakeside and back again. We can include car and boat hire as well as accommodation in a wide range of cabins and houses plus all the fishing tackle you will need.

Q : Do I have to rent a property or can I use one of the camp-sites ?
A : The choice is yours. If the trip is purely for fishing then it depends on the level of luxury you want. Most camp-sites have wash and shower facilities, toilets etc and you can fish 24hrs with many locations that allow you to camp right on the waters edge. The sites are exceptionally clean, well run and safe. In fact most sites we visited were empty especially the ones that were best for fishing. If you are taking the family then you would be better off renting a property as they really are excellent value.

Q : How much does it cost to use one of the camp-sites ?
A : Incredibly you can stay a whole week in most of them for just £50 !

Q : And how much for accommodation ?
A : This obviously varies depending on the number of rooms etc but as a guide the prices range from £350 pw to £700 pw. All are very well equipped and have just about everything you need. Prices are for the whole property, not per person, so they do represent superb value.

Q : Do I really need to rent a car ?
A : I guess not, at least if you are there for the fishing only, but you will miss a great deal of the amazing countryside, access to the entertainments and all the local towns have to offer.
Car hire is quite reasonable and we do have some discount deals with local companies that will bring the costs down even further. As for cost, If you reckon on around £ 250+ per week you will not be far away.

Q : What about a boat ?
A : To be frank I think that a boat is essential. Why go all the way to a place as vast as Kerr without giving yourself access to so many environments and habitats. Just cruising around the place is a marvellous experience and you will be totally at a loss as to where to fish, everywhere seems to hold so much promise. The cost of hiring a basic boat with an outboard is just a few pounds and many properties come complete with their own boats included in the price. If of course you want something more elaborate such as a fast Bass boat the cost will be about the same as a car but check to see what is available on the dates you want to travel as we may have something special on offer. Most of the boats are equipped with fish-finders etc.

Q : I am not too good with a boat and have little experience, is it dangerous ?
A : Any water can be dangerous ! The boats themselves are very easy to handle but avoid the Bass boats if you are a complete novice as they are very powerful.
Most of the usual fishing boats however are easy to handle and have plenty of deck space for gear and supplies. Most have floodlights etc and canopies. Whilst quick enough to get to where you want they are quite benign, more like a kind of luxury box on a raft ! Odd things but well equipped and ideal for cruising around the countless creeks whilst being capable of taking on the main expanse of lake without any problem. There are pictures of the various boats on one of the links or in our brochure. I know these things are a pain, but even if you are a good swimmer it always pays to wear a life-jacket, even if the locals never seem too, as you never know just what you'll get on the end of your line !

Q : Do I need to take tackle ?
A : We did take mountains of our own but as the location was relatively unknown to us we had to make sure that we could cope with any eventuality, it was work rather than pleasure if you get my point. Whilst there we did spot some complete kits in the hyperstores. You know the kind of thing, 6 or 7 ft rod, basic reel etc for less than £8 and from what we saw this is all that most of the locals use. Personally I think that you would be better off taking a couple of decent rods and reels. If you are after Carp specifically then bear in mind that the whole concept of using hair rigs is completely alien to most of the tackle stores. Fishing with the bait away from the hook baffles them. So bring your own. There's plenty of advice on the fishing angle to come over the next few days as we have loads more information to up-load. Again, look for the links below which should be live by the end of the week.

Q : What baits were best ?
A : Please refer to the relative links below as they become available.

Q : How much baggage can I take on the plane ?
A : It varies according to the airline but at least 50-70kilos split between cargo and hand luggage per person. We took everything including the kitchen sink and managed ok without any excess. I can be more specific when we book the plane for you.

Q : Are there any restrictions as to what I can take ?
A : With the inevitable security clamp-downs that are unfortunately necessary there are some restrictions with regards to hand luggage, no sharp objects for instance which includes a shaving kit etc so use your common sense and you should be ok. Anything doubtful should go in the cargo bay.

Q : What about taking flavourings, boilies etc ?
A : Having gained a lot of experience at Kerr I can honestly say that you won't need them. Boilies are pretty much useless and you won't find any for sale. However, if you feel naked without them you can buy ingredients such as yellow semolina, ground rice etc at the food stores. Remember though, the Americans have very strict anti-contamination policies and you are liable to get things like Tiger Nuts confiscated for being imported. We arrived at the airport in the US during a full security clamp-down though and still brought through all sorts of weird plastic bottles containing various foul smelling and strange liquids ...... and went straight through customs without a hitch. BUT, they did know who we were and knew we were on a research trip so whether you would have problems yourself is another matter.
We didn't need the stuff anyway so read our FAQ'S on fishing before taking the risk.

Q : When is the best time to go ?
A : Quite honestly there is something for everyone at any time of year, it depends on your preference re temperatures. Our last trip was around July time and although pretty warm at around 80-90F it was very humid. The lake temperature mirrored the ambient one and the water was incredibly warm. The fishing was excellent for just about every species but we were in the middle of the hurricane season. There were three big ones while we were there and although they were several hundred miles away we did get the side effects, heavy rain and such which did spoil the trip from a research point of view as the creeks turned brown and flooded making observations difficult. As we tend to spend more time watching than actually fishing it did cause us problems. In a few days we will be adding an annual rainfall and temperature chart to the site to help you decide which is best for you.
